Faro Airport Car Hire

Car Hire

IMPORTANT – The main (A-22 / IP1) is now a toll road and there are various points along the road when a new charge will apply. We were driving our own car and we simply swipped our credit card through a machine at the border between Spain and Portugal….it then debited the card as we drove around….the charges along the IPI1 were small…€1.00 most of the time…but if you are doing a lot of driving then this can add up…there are alternative routes but they can get clogged up.

When hiring a car, please ask the hire company how payment is to be made regarding electronic tolls. For their customers convenience, most car hiring companies have already installed devices on their vehicles and the costs of using the tolls are added at the client’s bill.

Car hire at this airport is a pretty big business with a whole host of companies offering an excellent range of vehicles at some excellent prices.

If you are staying for a short weekend break or any further west than say Portimao, you will find it cheaper to organise car hire than to take either a taxi or a private transfer.

Most of the main car rental companies at Faro Airport can be found just outside busy arrivals hall. To find them just pick up your luggage from the collection area and follow the signs from the arrivals hall.

Once in the arrivals hall take the first door on the right and head outside. The car hire companies are all located in a separate area to the right of the terminal building…there is a bit of construction work going on at the moment so take care but just follow the signs…its a 2 minute walk maximum!

Each of the companies run special offers at various times and each of them has slightly different policies on who they will lend cars to. For example some firms will not rent cars to anyone under 23 years old or anyone who has not held a full driving licence for at least one year.

Before driving the hire car away make sure you check the petrol situation. Have you paid for a full tank? How much is actually in the tank? How much needs to be in the tank when you return the car? If you need to return with a full tank of fuel then the nearest petrol station is on the main road into the airport, about 1km before you get the actual terminal.

We have always found driving in Portugal to be a fairly enjoyable experience, the roads are not particularly crowded on the Algarve, it is well sign posted and by collecting your own car you have the freedom to get out and explore this wonderful coastline.
