Categories of hotels in Portugal can be a bit confusing with apartamentos usually offering a block of flats with no reception facilities and owners usually employing a managing agent to rent out their properties, while aparthotels offer the same facilities as a hotel but without room service.
During your travels in the Algarve you might come across Pousadas: these are state run hotels situated all over Portugal which are converted historic buildings or have been set in special locations from which they can benefit from spectacular views. They are usually equal to 4 and 5 star hotels.

The five star Sheraton Algarve Hotel stands on a cliff-top Falesia beach surrounded by pine trees overlooking miles of unspoiled beaches and clear blue sea. This white Moorish style hotel has several wings stretching out into the landscaped gardens of pine trees, black and white mosaic stone pathways with Moroccan-style wooden bridges over streams.
Leisure amenities include Pine Cliffs nine-hole golf course and Academy, with a new golf clubhouse offering drinks and food. Guests can also have tennis lessons or take dip in one of the hotel's four swimming pools. There are three outdoor pools - two for children, one of which is heated - and an adult pool. The four star Hotel Faro is in the middle of Faro City Centre directly opposite the busy marina. There are a good number of restaurants, shops and bars right on its doorstep and you are just a 20 minutes (7km) drive from Faro International Airport. The Hotel Faro is approximately 500 metres from the bus station, 800 metres from the train station with easy access to the main highway leading to Lisbon and Spain
The Hotel Faro has 90 guest rooms comprising 61 Twins, 26 doubles and 3 suites as well as conference rooms and a business centre. The two star Hotel Alnacil is situated at the west entrance to Faro just 6km from the airport and an 8 minute walk from the centre of town with its many shops, bars and restaurants. If you are coming from Faro Airport, Albufeira (highway A-22) or Lisbon on the second roundabout at the entrance to Faro turn left, towards Olhão on to Gulbenkian Avenue. You will find the hotel on the first street on your right.
The Hotel Alnacil is comfortable small and modern hotel which opened in 1993 with 53 double and single guestrooms which come well equipped with air conditioning with individual remote control, telephone with automatic wake-up service, television with several international channels, private bathroom and a hair dryer. Two of the double rooms have as well a panoramic terrace overlooking the city and the Natural Park of Ria Formosa.
The Hotel Alnacir served by several bus lines to the city centre (8 minutes walking only) and to Forum Algarve Shopping Centre. The nearest beach is Faro Island which is 8km away and the new football stadium (Estádio Algarve) is 9km from the hotel.
