Algarve Climate
The geographical position of the Algarve close to the Mediterranean Sea, North Africa and Atlantic Ocean greatly influences its climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters with hardly any rain (50 days with rain and 500 mm on average each year). The Algarve averages around 3,000 hours of sun annually which makes it a favourite destination for golfers who can play there all year round.
The sea water temperature is around 14ºC in January reaching a high of 22ºC in August. These temperatures, combined with the white sandy beaches and calm seas, make the Algarve a great place for swimmers and sunbathers.

Due to its relief and geographical position, the Algarve is influenced climatically by the
European continent, North Africa, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean.
As you can see from the climate chart above, the temperature in the Algarve is very high during the summer months (it can rise to over 40ºC/100ºF) with long periods of sunshine.
So make sure you use plenty of high-factor sunscreen, especially on children. A hat and sunglasses are also essentials. It is advisable to avoid exposure to the sun during its strongest time between midday and 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Depending on the time of year you are visiting the Algarve it is worth considering hiring a car from Faro Airport with air conditioning.
